Exponent Calculator
Raise any number to a power, including negative and decimal exponents. Free, fast and easy to use.
Enter a base and an exponent to calculate the power bⁿ. Negative and decimal exponents are supported: a negative exponent gives the reciprocal (2⁻³ = 1/8) and an exponent of 1/2 is the square root. Very large or very small results are also shown in scientific notation.
Formula
bⁿ = b × b × … × b (n ×) b⁻ⁿ = 1 / bⁿ b^(1/n) = ⁿ√b

- Base (b): 10 · Exponent (n): 6 → Result bⁿ: 1 000 000
- Base (b): 2 · Exponent (n): -3 → Result bⁿ: 0,125
- Base (b): 1,5 · Exponent (n): 4 → Result bⁿ: 5,0625
- Base (b): 9 · Exponent (n): 0,5 → Result bⁿ: 3
What does an exponent mean?
The exponent says how many times the base is multiplied by itself: 2⁵ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32. Any non-zero number to the power of 0 equals 1.
What is a negative exponent?
A negative exponent means the reciprocal of the positive power: 10⁻² = 1 / 10² = 0.01. A fractional exponent is a root, for example 8^(1/3) = 2.
