Root Calculator
Calculate square roots, cube roots and any n-th root. Free, fast and easy to use.
Enter a number and the degree of the root to find the n-th root ⁿ√x – the number that, raised to the power n, gives x. Odd roots of negative numbers are calculated too (∛−27 = −3). The square and cube root are shown for comparison.
Formula
ⁿ√x = x^(1/n) √x = x^(1/2), ∛x = x^(1/3)

- Number (x): 144 · Degree of the root (n): 2 → n-th root ⁿ√x: 12
- Number (x): 125 · Degree of the root (n): 3 → n-th root ⁿ√x: 5
- Number (x): -27 · Degree of the root (n): 3 → n-th root ⁿ√x: -3
- Number (x): 1024 · Degree of the root (n): 10 → n-th root ⁿ√x: 2
What is the n-th root of a number?
The n-th root of x is the number that gives x when raised to the power n. The square root of 49 is 7 because 7² = 49, and the cube root of 125 is 5 because 5³ = 125.
Can you take the root of a negative number?
Odd roots of negative numbers are real: ∛−8 = −2. Even roots (square root, fourth root …) of negative numbers have no real result, so the calculator shows an error.
